Prison Officers have a risky job, and the vast majority of prisons in WA are overcrowded.
This overcrowding creates a dangerous workplace for our members. Many prisons are consistently short staffed, putting Prison Officers in greater danger. Staff are regularly being asked to work extra shifts to cover shortfalls, and even then some prisons are still running short staffed.
The government is planning to recruit more officers, but they can’t be recruited and trained quickly enough to alleviate the current overcrowding crisis.
